The present participle in French is a verb form used to describe ongoing actions, often equivalent to English verbs ending in -ing, and can function as a verb, adjective, or noun (gerund).
The present participle indicates simultaneous or ongoing actions.

- While working, I think

Used with en to describe simultaneous actions or manner.

As an Adjective
Describes a noun, indicating a quality or state.

Formation of Present Participles
The present participle is formed by taking the nous form of the present tense, removing the -ons ending, and adding -ant.
- parler (to speak) → nous parlons → parlant
- finir (to finish) → nous finissons → finissant
- voir (to see) → nous voyons → voyant
- faire (to do) → nous faisons → faisant
- prendre (to take) → nous prenons → prenant
There are only 3 irregular forms that must be memorized (they are used frequently):
- être (to be) → nous sommes → étant
- avoir (to have) → nous avons → ayant
- savoir (to know) → nous savons → sachant
