Present Participle

The present participle in French is a verb form used to describe ongoing actions, often equivalent to English verbs ending in -ing, and can function as a verb, adjective, or noun (gerund).

The present participle indicates simultaneous or ongoing actions.

  • En travaillant, je réfléchis
    • While working, I think

Usage and Formation

In the Gérondif (with en)

Used with en to describe simultaneous actions or manner.

  • Elle écoute de la musique en travaillant.
    • She listens to music while working.

Present Participle alone

Used independently to describe ongoing actions, often introducing a clause. This is used in more formal contexts.

  • Voyant le problème, il a réagi.
    • Seeing the problem, he reacted.

As an Adjective

Describes a noun, indicating a quality or state.

  • Une réunion fatigante.
    • A tiring meeting. Unlike the past participle, it does not agree in gender or number with the subject or noun except when used as an adjective.

Formation of Present Participles

The present participle is formed by taking the nous form of the present tense, removing the -ons ending, and adding -ant.

  • parler (to speak) → nous parlonsparlant
  • finir (to finish) → nous finissonsfinissant
  • voir (to see) → nous voyonsvoyant
  • faire (to do) → nous faisonsfaisant
  • prendre (to take) → nous prenonsprenant

There are only 3 irregular forms that must be memorized (they are used frequently):

  1. être (to be) → nous sommesétant
  2. avoir (to have) → nous avonsayant
  3. savoir (to know) → nous savonssachant
