Passé composé avec "avoir"
A1
A2
Past Compound with "avoir"

Passé composé with avoir is used to express completed actions in the past. It is formed with the present tense of avoir plus the Participle passé of the main verb.

  • J'ai rencontré le directeur.
    • I met the director.
  • Je n'ai pas reçu ton mail.
    • I didn’t receive your email.
  • Nous avons pris le train.
    • We took the train.
  • Vous l’avez rencontrée ?
    • Have you met her? (participle agrees with l’ = her)

Meaning: This tense uses avoir as the helper verb. It suggests the subject has performed or experienced the action, anchoring it in the past.

Origin: This structure evolved from Latin, where habere (to have) was used in perfect tenses. It became standard in French and other Romance languages for most verbs.

Other Languages: Similar systems exist in Spanish (he comido with haber), Italian (ho mangiato with avere), and English (I have eaten with have). German (ich habe gegessen with haben) and Dutch also use auxiliaries, combining have and be like French.

Formation

Avoir (au présent) + Participle passé

Present Tense of avoir

  • j’ai
  • tu as
  • il/elle a
  • nous avons
  • vous avez
  • ils/elles ont

Participle passé

  • 1st Group (-er verbs): Replace -er with (parlerparlé).
  • 2nd Group (-ir verbs, regular): Replace -ir with -i (finirfini).
  • 3rd Group (irregular verbs): Participle passés must be memorized (fairefait, prendrepris, voirvu).
  • For more information, look into Participle passé

Negation: Place ne before avoir and pas after it (Je n’ai pas mangé I didn’t eat).

Object Pronouns: Direct/indirect object pronouns are placed before avoir (Je lui ai parlé I spoke to him/her).

Agreement: The Participle passé does not agree with the subject when using avoir, except when a direct object pronoun precedes the verb (Je l’ai vue I saw her).
